Home Sweet Home

We are so excited to announce that Emily was discharged from UCSF on Thursday 5/20/21. After another blood transfusion and a final physical therapy evaluation, she was sent on her way and was finally able to see her kids and sleep in her own bed after being away at UCSF for nearly three weeks.

Prior to these recent hospitalizations, the longest she had ever been away from Ivy and Ivan was about 48 hours, so these last several weeks have been extremely challenging for them. Ivy and Ivan are thrilled to have their mother home and they are going above and beyond to support her! They are watching her like a hawk, doing extra chores around the house, making sure she stays safe, and waiting on her hand and foot.

They also did something really awesome… they wanted to show their mom that they support her and that she is never alone in her fight. On her first morning home from UCSF, with their dad’s help, they had a Sidecut Party where they all partially shaved their heads to match Emily. How cool is that?

During this last week, Emily has been focused on rehabilitation and healing. She’s been taking her recovery very seriously even though part of her just wants to jump up and hit the ground running! I mean that figuratively and literally. Those of you who know her, know how fierce and strong she is and you know that she thrives on working hard and loves to be outdoors. So, taking things slow is a challenge for her.

She is working to overcome some left sided deficits that have been impacting her mobility, coordination, and strength ever since her seizure on Tuesday 5/4. She is also experiencing some impulsivity and subtle personality changes as well. Her memory issues have almost completely resolved, however, there are some things that she still does not remember. She has come a long way and she continues to be enthusiastic and determined to win this war.

She and Ben headed back out to San Francisco this evening and will be spending the next two days meeting with Emily’s multidisciplinary care team. Over the course of the next two days, Emily hopes to finally receive a definitive diagnosis on her lymphoma. She is also looking forward to learning more about the pathology of her glioma.

She already knows that she is in for one hell of a fight against both types of cancer, but knowing the specific cellular types, grade, and stages will help to answer her endlessly long list of questions and will streamline her treatment plans. It will also help her to finally be able to set some expectations and plans for her future. These next two days will be scary, informative, and exciting all at the same time.

Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they learn more about Emily’s prognosis and treatment plan.

Together we can and will continue to fight this war beside her as her devoted and fearless Warriors! !
